Program Information
Step 1....Canskate Canskate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program for beginners of all ages that teaches fundamental movements (go forward, go backward, stop, turn, spin and jump) and basic skills set up in seven stages. The CanSkate program emphasizes fun and continuous movement in a group lesson format, taught by professional Skate Canada coaches and assisted by trained Program Assistants. Awards and incentives are used to motivate skaters to achieve and develop their skills as well as to keep interest high! CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada programs. Jr. Development.... The final, optional enrichment Stage 7 (pre-preliminary) of the CanSkate program is a transitional stage that serves as a bridge from CanSkate to the StarSkate Program. It introduces many figure skating skills which are included in the Preliminary level tests. Skaters who complete Stage 7 are well on their way to taking their first Skate Canada test.
Step 2....Skate Canada Star Skate Program Where do skaters go who have good basic skating skills and are ready for more challenge? The Skate Canada StarSkate Program is the logical choice for those who want to pursue figure skating. Skaters learn figure skating skills in three main disciplines: Skating skills, free skate and dance, in either group, semi-private or private lesson format, taught by professional coaches. Participants in the Primary test level earn badges as they master the skills. Other incentives including certificates, stickers and tattoos are available to reward participation and effort. Skaters also have the option to be tested against a national standard by specially trained evaluators. The Skate Canada StarSkate Program serves as an entry into the Skate Canada competitive program by qualifying skaters for various levels of events. The Skate Canada StarSkate Program is an excellent option for former CanSkate participants because skaters progress at their own rate and can achieve their own goals, depending on their time and financial commitment. Options....
Skaters who have a general ability can also participate in the Festival SynchroSkate program, which teaches skaters of all ages the basics of synchronized skating, also known as precision team skating. Teams of eight or more skaters can earn rewards by completing required elements. Many clubs use Festival SynchroSkate in conjunction with their CanSkate and group lesson StarSkate programs. Recreational synchro teams may enter invitational recreational competitions.
CanPowerSkate, which provides an alternative to figure skating, focuses on teaching balance, power, agility, speed and endurance skills which are especially important for hockey and ringette players. Bronze, silver and gold chevrons are awarded in each of three levels.
Step 3....Skate Canada Competitive Program CanSkate or StarSkate skaters who show potential as competitive skaters can move into the Competitive Program. This program incorporates a series of tests and other training opportunities to help competitors with potential to advance from provincial to national championships and beyond. Skaters may choose to compete in one or more of the following disciplines: singles, pairs, ice dancing and synchronized skating. For more information contact us @ grandviewsc@sk8bc.com
